Bouldering is a climbing discipline where you don’t climb very far off the ground – so climbers don’t use ropes or harnesses! It started when attempting climbs on literal boulders, and nowadays is exploding in popularity due to the low technical expertise required to start – you don’t need to know any knots, and any bouldering wall can get you climbing along fairly quickly in your first session.

As you’ll see in the video below, Bouldering focusses on very short routes (due to the height limitation) that are instead either very technical, or require a lot of power / strength at the high end of competition. If you’re entirely new to climbing, and don’t want to go all out on investing in lots of gear / kit, why not try dip your toe in with an afternoon bouldering at a local gym?
